Fake Security Cameras Can Supplement Your Surveillance System

If security cameras are already part of your home security system, then you know how expensive they can be.  They don’t always provide the strongest preventative measures but they can be used to help law enforcement apprehend suspects. Still, If crime deterrence is your main priority then you can use a dummy security camera to enhance the deterrent measures your already existing video surveillance system.

Fake security cameras are not the cheap, toy-like, objects you might imagine.  They now come with batteries to provide blinking lights so that they appear to be powered.  Some even come with motion detectors and motors so that they can follow the motions of any intruder.  The dummy motion detecting cameras are likely to be close to the price of a real camera but they can be useful if you have a large area to cover and need a strong visual deterrent.

Fake Security Camera Installation

When installing a fake camera system make sure to have the installation appear as real as possible.  Even if using the battery powered cameras you should provide wires to the camera to make it appear as if it is powered and there is a video cable providing a feed to a recorder.  Put them in areas where they are highly visible.  Since they provide no recording capability only deterrence, they are ineffective if they cannot be seen.  Make sure to intersperse them randomly with your real cameras, you do not want intruders to know which are the real cameras and which are not.  If possible make them look as much like your real cameras as possible.  Many times companies that make security cameras can provide an empty housing so that you can use the housing as a dummy camera.

Remember that security cameras are only one facet of a home security system do not rely on them to prevent crime.  They must be properly placed, realistically installed, and work in conjunction with other methods of crime deterrence.  Remember, home security is rarely the matter of one method but rather a combination of methods that make your property unattractive to criminals.  Burglars rarely spend more than 30 seconds getting into a building and once in, rarely spend more than 2 minutes inside.  They want to be in and out quickly and without being seen.  If you can make them take longer than 30 seconds to get in they they will often move on to an easier target.  If they think they might be seen as well, they are more likely to bypass your property.

Chris Lynn writes extensively about many different subjects including home security. Make sure and do your research before purchasing fake security cameras and make sure you can integrate it with your current system.
