Getting the Lowdown on a Water Heat Exchanger
Why do people need a water heat exchanger? This device is built for efficient heat transfer using one medium to another. A solid wall can separate this medium so that they never mix, or it can be through direct contact.
This is used for solar water heating systems. Exchangers are used to transfer solar energy absorbed in solar collectors to the liquid or air used to heat water or a space.
This material can be made of steel, copper, bronze, stainless steel, aluminum, or cast iron. But, for solar heating systems, they usually use copper. This is because copper is a good thermal conductor and it has greater resistance to corrosion.
A water heat exchanger, especially the solar type, can be of three different types. This type of exchanger uses a heat-transfer fluid. This will circulate through the solar collector, absorb heat, and then flow through the exchangers. The device will then transfer its heat to water in a storage tank.
Another type is the air-to-liquid type. With air heater collectors, solar heating systems usually do not need exchangers between the solar collector and the air distribution system.
It can also be of different designs. Some common ones are coil-in-tank. This design has exchangers that are coils of tubing in the storage tank. It can be a single tube or the thickness of two tubes. You can also place the coil on the outside of the collector tank with a cover of insulation, but this is a less efficient alternative.
Another design is the shell-and-tube. This uses exchangers that are separate from external to the storage tank. This has two separate fluid loops inside a case or shell. And, the fluids flow in opposite directions to each other through the heat exchangers. This maximizes heat transfer. One loop of this design has fluid or water to be heated. This fluid circulates through the inner tubes. The second loop on the other hand has the heat-transfer fluid flow between the shell and the tubes of water.
The last design is the tube-in-tube. This is a very efficient design as the tubes of water and the heat transfer fluid are in direct thermal contact with each other. The water and heat transfer fluid flow in opposite directions to each other. It also has two loops similar to those described in the shell-and-tube heat exchangers.
But, with a water heat exchanger, people have to ensure that the exchangers are of the correct size to be effective. Some factors to consider for proper sizing are the type, the characteristics of the heat-transfer fluid, flow rate, and the inlet and outlet temperature for each fluid. And, to ensure maximize performance, people should always follow the manufacturer’s installation recommendations for the device.
