Housing Tips – Installing Carpet & Carpet Pads

There are various factors to consider when you’re shopping for carpeting and planning to do the installation yourself. Fiber content, type of pile, and durability are material factors to look at when selecting a particular carpet. The best carpets have been traditionally made from wool or a mixture of wool and a percentage of man-made fiber. Wool carpet is quite expensive, but with blends of nylon, polypropylene, acrylic, rayon, and polyester, modern carpeting has been designed to combat things such as stains, wear, and high costs. If the installation involves seams, consider hiring a professional.

Installing carpeting isn’t technically difficult, but can be a challenge on large areas with limited access. Remember, carpeting comes normally in 12″ long rolls and can be quite heavy and difficult to handle. If you have to seam two pieces together, make sure you join the pieces with the “grain” or coloring texture going in the same direction.

Carpeting is not limited to indoor settings. Indoor/outdoor carpeting, which used to look like bad artificial turf, is now available in many colorful patterns, designs and textures which, by the way are a lot easier on bare feet. Indoor/outdoor carpeting is often used in patio settings where durability and water exposure are concerns. Most indoor/outdoor carpeting is made with short pile and is very easy to clean with a broom or vacuum. Installation is similar to felt backed vinyl flooring except that the adhesive is designed specifically for indoor/outdoor applications. Make sure all surfaces are clean and dry before beginning installation.
