How to Clean When Leaving a Rented Property
Cleaning end of tenancy property can be a tough job, but with a little bit of elbow grease, it can be done in a jiffy. Below are some simple steps on how to clean the property adequately, so you can get that deposit back.
Tips on cleaning
Hallway- Vacuum and mop (especially in the corners), Vacuum carpet edges; Remove cobwebs; Wipe skirting boards; Clean mirrors and Clean door frame.
Bedrooms – Vacuum and mop (if necessary); Dust and wash window sills and ledges; Clean inside cupboards and wardrobes; Remove cobwebs; Clean windows inside; Vacuum carpet edges and Clean mirrors
Kitchen – Damp wipe all kitchen countertops; defrost freezer; Clean hob/ grill; clean inside/outside fridge; Sweep and wash hard surface floors; de-scale and clean sink, Clean inside/outside microwave; Wash inside/outside of dishwasher; damp wipe window ledges, skirting boards, door frame and radiator. Clean inside/outside all kitchen cupboards; Clean inside/outside of oven;
Bathrooms – Clean mirrors; Scrub and disinfect bathroom floors; Scrub and disinfect toilet; Scrub and de-scale bathroom sinks; wipe all counters; Clean and de-scale bath & showers, shower doors and wipe skirting boards and door frame.
Lounge area- Carpet cleaning and mop (if necessary), Vacuum carpet edges, Clean mirrors, Polish table, Clean and polish all surfaces, Clean pictures, wipe skirting boards and door frame, Remove cobwebs; Clean windows inside; Dust and wash window sills and window frames, Remove litter.
General cleaning
After you have done all of the above jobs, you can now move onto the other parts of the house – don’t worry, you have nearly finished! Below is a list of jobs on general maintenance:
First of all get the worst and most difficult job out of the way – Mattress cleaning. Lift the mattress up and vacuum underneath it.
Secondly, try to dust the property throughout, including: light fittings and shades, light switches, dado rails, skirting, spindles and banisters, curtain rails, wall pictures, mirrors, fire surround and radiators.
All glass (furniture tops, mirrors, picture frames etc) needs to be cleaned with window cleaner. All other floors to be washed using correct type of cleaning materials. All light furniture should be moved and carpets should be vacuum cleaned. Dust skirting boards behind furniture.
Drawers and shelves should be cleared of any rubbish (newspapers and magazines) and telephone directories to be kept and stored neatly.
All wooden furniture needs to be carefully wiped clear of dust. Upholstery should be vacuumed, also cushions lifted and cleaned underneath.
Last of all, windows should be cleaned internally and windows sills need to be wiped down. All doors and top of doors need to be cleaned. Try to polish door handles.
