Measuring Your Home For Carpet
Deciding what carpet is the first step as this will determine several factors, e.g. which way the carpet will run if you have stairs or if the carpet has a pattern and where joins may be. If you have stairs and you have decided to choose a carpet with a pattern or ribs the pattern must always run down the stairs vertically, so make sure when measuring that the rooms or hallways and joins run the same way. Draw a plan of the areas you want to carpet keep the plans simple you don’t have to draw in every nook and cranny just the basic shapes.
After deciding what carpet or flooring you want and are satisfied with your plan you can now start to measure the rooms etc. When measuring it is very important to measure the widest point so make sure you measure into doorways as this is what most people over look. Just take your time to look in the room and make sure you have accounted for all the areas in the room. Most carpet is 4 or 5 meters in width so take this into account ie.where joins will go if required or how much waste will there be to do other areas.
when measuring stairs just measure the width and allow approx 1.5 foot per stair in length. Draw arrows on your plans to which way the carpet will run this will make it easier when working out what size carpet you will need.
Now you have your measurement and plans for your flooring start to work out what cuts of carpet you will need, start with the biggest cuts of carpet, work out if any of the rooms have any waste and work out if this waste will be useable in any other flooring areas i.e. stairs, landing or even joins .again always remember it all must run the same way it’s no good having a big of cut from a room that runs a different way.
