Outdoor Carpet – There’s More Options Than You Think

Outdoor Carpet is a very popular item, but never seems to get the attention of the other flooring types. Indoor/outdoor carpet is the blue collar product of the flooring business. It’s hard working but gets little attention. If you think you might need or want outdoor carpet, you might be surprised at the different styles available and popular uses of this type of carpet.

There are three primary types of outdoor carpet.
• Synthetic grass – Grass is not only used for putting and golf activity areas, but has other uses as well. Many consumers use a grass product around pools, decks, boat docks, and even to take camping for setting outside the tent or RV. Grass also is used sometimes in product displays in the retail industry. Popular colors are Green, Black and Blue.
• Loop – Loop outdoor carpet is generally considered the most attractive of the outdoor products. It has a similar look and feel to commercial carpet with small tight ribbed loops. It has a great look for covered porches, decks and as the other types is very popular with campers. Popular colors are Charcoal, Light grey, Brown, Black, and Dark red.
• Cut Pile – Cut pile outdoor carpet has a smooth, flat texture or can seem fuzzy and soft sometimes. This type of carpet is easy on bare feet and does well on porches, decks and is very popular when used as boat carpet. The non-loop style does well with keeping fish hooks from hanging on the carpet for those on the water with a boat used for a lot of fishing.
There are two primary types of backing used for outdoor carpet.
• Unitary backing – This is backing that is typically sprayed on. The primary material used is a special latex that holds up well under the elements and it is perfectly ok for this to get wet. Unitary is very popular on Loop and Cut pile products.
• Marine backing – An extremely pliable backing that almost feels like a thin rubber back. This type of back works great for areas that would stay wet or areas that you would need a very flexible product for installation, like boats or stairs. This backing is used heavily on Grass products.

Any of the products or backing above should work well for most any outdoor application you may have. These products are easily shipped as well as they can be rolled tight or in some cases even folded without causing permanent creases to the face of the Carpet.
