Termites Orange – Is it Better Than Fumigating?

When I first moved to Southern California some 10 years ago, one of the first things which caught my attention in a weird sort of way (Before I went on Hollywood Blvd.) was when I came across a house being fumigated. It was a strange and almost shocking sight. It looked eerie and almost monstrous. I remember asking the taxi driver to stop and let me look at what he later explained to me was a house being fumigated and that this was standard treatment for termites in California. It was much later that I learned what fumigation really entails and some of the sharp criticism which environmentalists throw against this method of exterminating. Hence my interest in termites orange. Is orange oil better than fumigating?

Unfortunately, even though orange oil can be traced to early experiments with using arsenic as a pesticide in the 1930s, a lot of controversy and doubt still attends this method of extermination. Simply stated, orange oil is a chemical compound made from orange peels which is deadly to termites that come into contact with it and it can also block other termites from eating which results in the pests starving to death. It is pumped into wood for exterminating dry wood insects oftentimes through the tunnels made by the termites. But some argue that this method of treatment is not as effective as fumigating because it only kills those insects which come into contact with the oil whereas fumigating spreads out and reaches termites even in remote areas of a house.

However, orange oil is said to be more environmentally friendly than fumigation. Nevertheless, this form of treatment continues to struggle against being accepted over its rival. For instant, returning to California, there the law seems to approve orange oil and other forms of extermination for “spot treatments” but not for whole house treatment. If the entire house or other structure needs to be treated, then California requires that either fumigation or heat treatment be used.

I had my home here in Southern California treated with orange oil by a termite service named Dial Us Termite. I was not sure about orange oil but 3 years later is it still working. Just one person’s testimony, but I was happy with it and they killed my termites. Here is their website: http://www.dialustermite.net
