Tiffany Lamps – An American Treasure
For a colorful, delicate addition to any room, a Tiffany Lamp is a great choice. Originating in the 1880’s from the creative hands of Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) these lights began a whole new era in the lighting industry.
Tiffany, a painter, stained glass window artist, and glass manufacturer developed these lights. As a stained glass artisan he even worked for the White House and multiple churches. One day while in his work shop he saw a pile of left over cut off glass pieces left over from the stained glass windows. The hues, glass textures, and shades of color captivated his attention. Before long he began to cut and lay the pieces out into a simple geometric pattern.
Looking at his creation he began to toy with how to hold the conglomeration together. The answer came in the form of copper foil being applied to the edges of each glass piece. Then he soldered each glass, linking one to the next. In the end he had a single solid lamp shade.
Tiffany liked the lighting ideas so much that he disbanded his stained glass window cooperative and devoted his time to the Tiffany Style Lamps.
With the turn of the century more and more demand arose for these works of art. At the peak, Tiffany Studios employed over 300 people. Among these artisans were a group of unmarried ladies. As working after marriage was not allowed, these ladies became known as the Tiffany Girls. One of the lead designers was a lady by the name of Clara Driscoll. Just a few years ago it came to light that Clara Driscoll and her ladies were responsible for some of the very best Tiffany designs. The Daffodil, Dragonfly, Wisteria, and Peony are still some of the most sought after.
Antique Tiffany lights are very rare and expensive, typically bringing in over a million dollars. Today companies such as Dale Tiffany Lamps, Medya, and Quoizel produce nice quality replicas for anywhere from under $100 to about $500.
Light styles include the Tiffany Table Lamp, Tiffany Floor Lamps, accent lights, home or cone style shades, hanging lights, and even pool table lights.
For whatever room or color you are decorating for, consider adding a little American history with Tiffany Lamps.
