Time to Get Organized
With the nice weather around the corner, many people are thinking about cleaning out their garage. Here are a few simple tips to help you get started. Sort your stuff – Figure out what you own – Sort into categories – Use the “Like with Like” principal as it is a powerful technique
Toss the trash – Get rid of all broken items including tools and toys
Share your stuff – Return “Borrowed” items to their original owner – Keep the best, then donate/giveaway the rest
Measure the space – With your car(s) in the garage measure the remaining space – With overhead storage make sure to consider the height of the vehicle including with the truck and/or hood open
Plan the space – Designate certain spaces for certain items – Make sure items that need to be accessible are
Store it where you use it – Keep most frequently used items in easy to reach locations – Store infrequently used items in harder to get at locations
Add storage options – Whenever possible use all the space from floor to ceiling – Add cabinets, shelves, bins and tubs
Give everything a home – Do not mixed categories – Leave room for growth
Label, Label, Label – Label everything – For bins and containers label the lids and sides – Place labels on cabinets and shelves
Maintain the new system – Put items away when you are done with them – Break your old habits
Finally, some useful items to help you include: graph paper, heavy duty garbage bags, assorted sizes of bins and containers, a labeler such as the Brother P-Touch. Although these tips are for the garage, they will help you organize almost any space in your home.
