Why Do Refrigerators Leak Water and How Can You Fix it?

Having trouble with your leaky refrigerator? Better find out what seems to be causing it and how you can fix this on your own.

A leaky refrigerator is a common problem to refrigerators that needs to be manually defrosted. If you are using a no-defrost fridge, this should no be problem. Usually when the fridge goes into the defrost cycle, the collected ice melts and goes to the evaporator coils. This is how the appliance drains it off. It goes to a drip pan you can find under the fridge.

However, if there is something that is blocking the drainage path, it will cause the water to go back. In this case, you need to check out if something is blocking its path and remove it. In other case, there might be a hole, dent or a crack in the drain tube. Once you have solved the problem, the drained water will evaporate.

Also make sure that it is not water leak. There might just be spilled liquid inside your fridge and this is causing the problem. Check your water source and this might also be causing the problem.

If it is not the case, another cause can be mold formation in the drain tube. This will cause clogging and you need to get rid of the mold by clearing up the drain tub.

If your refrigerator has an ice maker or a water dispenser, this may cause the leaking. The water hose or attachments at the back of the fridge may have come loose and this causes the leaking. Make sure you properly attack it. Check where the tube of the water dispenser is attached and follow it. Connect it properly.

It can also be caused by an uneven placing of your appliance. When one side of the fridge is tilted, it will cause leaking. Remove the bottom grills of your fridge and have someone tilt it backward so you can place a piece of wood or a platform to even it out. Once you have done so, the leaking will surely stop.

Also check the door if it closes properly. Air may be escaping causing a sudden drop in the temperature of the inside of your fridge. If this happens, it may melt the ice in the ice maker and will cause a leaky problem.

So go ahead and check the root problem of your leaky refrigerator. Once you have found the cause of the problem, you can easily find the solution.
