Why I Love My Refrigerator Freezer on the Bottom

Over the years, I have owned many refrigerators, all with some different combination of fridge/freezer locations. Excluding the miniature or countertop variety, there are three common configurations: refrigerator freezer on bottom, refrigerator freezer on top, and side by side. While it may not be obvious at first, it is amazing how something as simple as the design of a refrigerator can make such a difference in the kitchen.

The side by side used to be the king – it seemed as though these were the only types available. The biggest frustration with them was that should something wide need to be frozen (such as a large pork loin) or refrigerate (such as a vegetable platter), chances are one would run out of room. The refrigerator freezer on top combination made it easy to get to the frozen foods, but leads to spending more time bent over trying to find refrigerated items in the low sections or drawers.

Recently however, I purchased a unit with the refrigerator freezer on bottom. What a difference it made in the day to day usage of something as mundane as a refrigerator! I easily access my cooled items without bending over – and there’s even an ice/water dispenser in one door. The freezer on the bottom design is the ultimate in convenience.

While I may open the top portion a dozen or more times a day, I explore the bottom perhaps once or twice in the same amount of time. So it has turned out to be the best of both worlds – I get the ease of use of having the cool items in the top, and having the refrigerator freezer on bottom allows me to access the those items easily – when needed. My next fridge will definitely be the same type!
