Your Home Security System – 7 Components You Gotta Have
If you are thinking of getting a home security system, or upgrading the one you already have, you’ve made a wise decision.
But you probably would like to know what the essential components are for that security system. In other words, what are the basics that your security system should have in it?
1. Master Control Panel — Virtually every home security system has one. They’re often found in a beige steel box in a closet. That’s what contains the "computer", or the guts of the home security system.
2. Touchpad — This is the keypad that you have on the wall that has numbers similar to those on a phone dial. You use these numbers to enter in your "code" to arm or disarm your system. And a good keypad, additionally, has three "panic buttons" on it — one for fire, one for police, and one for medical emergencies. That way, if you have one of those emergencies, you don’t have to call "9-1-1". And if you have to leave the house, eventually there will be a dispatch.
3. Siren — The siren goes off when the alarm is set off, and it should be loud enough so that you can’t sleep through it. A typical siren might be 105 to 110 decibels. Not loud enough to wake up the whole neighborhood, but loud enough to wake you up, and scare away a potential burglar.
4. Motion Sensor — Motion sensors are important for when you go away. If a burglar breaks in through a window, or a heat duct, or saws a hold through the wall or floor while you’re gone, the motion sensor will "get" them as they cross it’s "path". So it’s an important part of your security system. A good motion sensor will be "pet immune", so that if you have a pet that’s not too large, they can run around you home while you’re gone, without setting off the motion sensor.
5. Phone Connector — This is the unit that connects your system to your phone line, and when the alarm goes off, it allows a signal to be sent to the command center of the monitoring company. If you don’t have a regular landline phone, it can be set up with a cell-phone system. In that case, we would actually install a cell phone in your system, so that when the alarm goes off, the alarm goes over THAT cell phone to the command center. Then they call you back on YOUR cell phone.
6. Rechargeable Backup Battery — That way, if the electric goes out in your home, the unit continues to operate. When the electric comes back on, it recharges itself, and you’re back in business.
7. Door Sensors — This is one of the most critical, because most burglaries take place through the entrance of a door. A typical basic system might contain three door sensors. And if you have more doors than that, you may need to purchase extra door sensors, but they’re extremely important.
There are several other components that you can get, but those I’ve mentioned are the most important, the "basics", the ones you don’t want to be without. Additional equipment would be based on whether your budget permits, and in many cases the basics would be provided to you at no upfront cost, through several companies that you would want to compare.
